Understanding Flooded Basement Repairs

Hi there, I'm Udon Pollack. I am passionate about protecting foundations from flood damage. The foundation is the only thing connecting the house to the ground. It keeps the home standing through heavy storms and small land shifts. Every once in a while, foundations will develop cracks that let water seep through the walls. As a result, the basement may flood during the next heavy storm. In addition, water coming through the cracks continues to weaken the foundation. Luckily, people can have their foundations sealed up by a professional to stop this harmful progression. I will teach everyone the basics of flooded basement repairs through this site. Everyone deserves to have a sturdy home set on a strong foundation and I'm here to help people understand how to accomplish that feat. Thanks for visiting my site. Come back soon.

2 Decisions To Make Before Replacing Your Shingled Roof With A Metal Roof

Jackson Andrews

If the roof on your house is shot, you will need to replace it before it starts leaking. Deciding to upgrade from a shingled roof to a metal roof might be your plan, but you might not be sure how to do this or what building materials to purchase. Replacing a roof yourself can be difficult to do, unless you are experienced with roofing projects. As you start planning for this, here are two things you will need to consider.

Will The Old Roof Need To Come Off?

There are times when a new roof can be placed directly over an existing roof, but there are also times when the old roof must be removed before the new roof can be installed. One thing you should know about metal roofs is that they are light, especially when compared to shingles. Because of this, you may be able to leave the existing roof on your home instead of ripping it off.

Most cities have building codes that relate to roofs, and a common code is that a structure can have no more than two roofs on it. In other words, if your house already has two layers of shingles, you cannot add a third layer or any other type of roof over it. This code is in place due to problems that occur because of the weight of roofs.

To determine whether or not you must remove your roof, find out how many layers of roofing materials are already on the roof. If there is only one layer, you could place the metal roofing materials right over the top. If the old roof has to come off, you will need to rent a dumpster and grab the right supplies and equipment for the job. This will include using a roofing shovel to scrape the shingles off, or you could use a garden fork to do this.

What Materials Will Be Needed?

The second consideration is the types of building materials you will need to accomplish the job. When you replace a roof yourself, you will have to select the materials for the project, and it's always important to have the right building materials.

The first thing you will have to purchase is the metal roofing material, and there are two main options to choose from:

  1. Panels – Metal roofing panels are large pieces of metal. Using panels for your roof will be the fastest option when replacing a roof because they cover more square footage.
  2. Shingles – The other option is to choose metal shingles. These look like shingles because they are smaller than panels, but they are made of metal.

Within these two categories of metal roofing materials, there will be many other choices too. You will have to choose the color of the roof, and you will have a lot of different styles of metal roofing materials to choose from.

Once you select the type of metal you would like, you will also need to purchase additional supplies for the roof. This will include:

  • Flashing – This is a metal product that is placed around opening on a roof, and it is designed to stop water from leaking through the cracks. You will need to place this around vents and skylights, and around any other openings you may have on your roof, including a chimney.
  • Underlayment – You will also need to purchase rolls of underlayment to put down on your roof. This is a necessary step even if you are placing the roof over an existing roof. In some case, roofers prefer using insulated foam boards instead, and you can talk to a roofing company to find out which option is better.
  • Steel screws – The other necessary supply you will need is steel screws. These are used to hold the metal roofing in place, and you should make sure you purchase the type designed for metal roofing projects.

While it is cheaper to replace a roof yourself, this is not always the best route to take. If you want to make sure the job is done correctly, it might be better to hire a contractor that offers roofing services.
